Joystiq claims to have documentation which confirms that Xbox 360 owners will soon be able to use regular USB flash drives as dedicated storage devices for their consoles. They also claim to have spoken to two separate sources who have confirmed this.

The document which was supposedly authored by a Microsoft senior software developer states that due to "increased market penetration of high-capacity, high throughput USB mass storage devices, and a 2010 Xbox 360 system update,” Xbox 360 owners will soon be able to use external USB based storage products as dedicated storage devices.

The update is due in spring (our Autumn), and once it is installed, users will be able to download Xbox Live games, DLC, demos and more to external USB drives. Gamers will even be able to install full games to USB drives, provided they have the space on the drive.

This new functionality will be particularly attractive to Xbox 360 Arcade owners who want storage space, but do not want to cough up for one of the ridiculously priced Xbox 360 harddrives. Indeed, in light of this development, the Xbox 360 Arcade is now a more attractive console than ever before.

The maximum USB storage size will be 16GB per drive, and users can use two if they like. It will not be possible to use more than two drives however, effectively limiting USB storage to 32GB, a number which many will be quite happy with.

A good and bad idea here. If they're using FAT32 then you won't be able to download full Xbox games over 4GB - due to the FAT32 file size limitation.
You also get flash drives bigger than 16GB. In fact the company I work for sells 128GB drives.

This is the part I really dont understand if the people knows its really expensive why cant just Mircosoft just drop the price it would make things alot easier for all of us.

I agree with ups and down but the FAT32... just kinda blows. :(
