Official Announcement: Dropping of Trading Cards
« on: April 08, 2011, 09:33:46 AM »
Hey everyone! I decided to announce this here, first.

After a lot of consideration I have decided to completely drop trading cards i.e. Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic the Gathering from the website. There are a few reasons for this:
  • It requires a massive investment and a gamble from Digital Sushi’s side. With card rules constantly changing we would be left with a lot of dead stock.
  • It requires a massive investment and gamble from customers. Now as I business I should be wanting all of that money, but having played TCGs in the past I cannot bring myself to sell them. To me, the money is eventually wasted and customers are left with dead cards as rules change.
  • Expansions come out every month and core sets every year. This is incredible difficult to keep up with.
Games can be very unfair as certain cards fall away with each generation.
I do apologise to anyone who purchased from us. You can purchase these game cards from most comic shops and Exclusive Books stores.

There is a bright side to this!

We will be selling Living Card Games! These aren’t zombie card games, but rather a relative to TCGs. Living Card games are also launched as core sets and boosters. The key difference is every single set and booster has the identical cards, there is no randomisation. I really like this idea and here are my reasons:
  • On a stock level it’s very easy to maintain, which means I can give customers the best service possible on these products.
  • The customer doesn’t need to put in large amounts of money to get the cards that they want.
  • Now, this does remove the “trading” aspect of cards, but it also makes battling a lot more fair. Since each player has the identical cards it all comes down to strategy and not a scenario of, “My card is stronger than yours.”
  • We will we working closely with our suppliers to organise card events and tournaments.

I hope everyone understands my decisions and it’s not something I’ve taken lightly. Changes are already being made to the website to accommodate more Living Card Games, so watch this space!

There's a line I use when approaching new suppliers, and I stand by it: At Digital Sushi we are avid gamers and refuse to sell any products that we wouldn’t play, use or enjoy ourselves :)

I can't say I blame you - the reasons listed at the beginning of your post are essentially why I packed it in with Magic: The Gathering - and being a collector, I had to have EVERY SINGLE CARD!!! to make up the full set. It nearly bankrupted me  :'(.

Congrats BB, the 1st step to recovery is always admitance.

@Graham: If each card pack is identical, why do you need booster packs? (wrt LCG's)

Think of it like a PC game. StarCraft was released (core game) and then Broodwars (booster) was released as well. Each booster is more of an expansion pack, they're just called boosters.

I've been adding quite a few of the Call of Cthulhu boosters. Still more to come!

Sorry about that. Maybe, maybe one day I'll re-look at it, but it really isn't a priority for Digital Sushi.

That being said the Living Card Games are doing incredibly well with us!
