What documentaties have you recently seen?
« on: March 18, 2011, 12:36:45 AM »
Please feel free to post any documentaries you've recently seen, or highly recommend others to watch, in this thread - which has been a long time coming.

I love my sci-fi doccies, mainly those about the cosmos. Lately though, I've been neglecting the handful I still sitting in my doccies folder.

Wonders of the Solar System (a 5 part series) is my all-time fav, hosted by Brian Cox (physicist and professor at the University of Manchester). It was presented in an interesting and exciting way, truly epic exp. Found this as part of a review on IMDb.com, that shares my feelings towards the series...
Quote
This series, describing and explaining some of the extraordinarydiscoveries made in astronomy and our explorations of the solar systemas well as our own world, ranks as one of the most entertaining andinformative series of programmes I've seen in a long life of watchingtoo much television.

Now, I bring this up as I today got my hands on two episode of Wonders of the Universe. Presented by the same dude, and thus making it a must watch. ;) Reading up on this new show, I see that epi 3 is only coming  out on the 20th of March.

Sadly though, for some reason, no matter how fantastic the documentary is, I can't help but start falling asleep halfway through. T_T Currently I'm 26 mins into epi 1 and am forced to carry on with it tomorrow. :/

*edit*
Man, I'm gonna wake up with one monster of a headache in the morning. >_< lol

Awesome idea for a topic - dunno why I didn't think of it myself, as I am a doccie monster!  :P BTW - wouldn't call what yer watching Sci-Fi - more Sci-fact  :P ;D ;) - however, having said that:-

Ancient Aliens - Did Aliens come to Earth thousands of years before recorded civilization? Did they help create the human race? What wondrous technology did they have? And where is the evidence? Very interesting look at some of the alternative theories out there. Takes a bit of a scientific approach to the subject - for instance, gold trinkets that could be some sort of aircraft, are built as remote-controlled models - and they actually fly!

Dogfights : The Zero Killer - story of the Grumman F6F Hellcat, the upgraded version of the F4F Wildcat, the first US plane to be able to take on the Japanese Zero and beat it. Awesome CG recreations of the battles.

Wonders of the Universe
102. Seems I forgot to post about this one. >_< A lil disappointed with the direction of this series (not at all what I was expecting). They're focusing a lot on  the elements the stars/supernova are composed of, like helium, hydrogen, etc. Going into detail of where the different elements are formed - interesting note, only during the biggest of supernovae, where temperatures reach the highest ever in the universe (think it's upto 100mil degrees) is the pressure high enough to create the heaviest elements from the periodic table.

Solving History With Olly Steeds - watched 2 eps that caught my interest: the first on hidden "Nazi Treasure", mainly dealing with the missing Amber Room stolen from the Russians; and the other on "Hitler's Mummies" - the Nazi attempts to confirm the existence of the Aryan nation through the study of ancient mummies and other artifacts.

Clash of the Gods - the series deals with the origins of mythological gods and creatures. I was particularly interested in ep 9, which dealt with the myths behind J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings saga. Brilliantly done.

The Musical Brain - it seems music is not only a way to enhance your moods, but may actually be an integral part of human development. The doccy follows some interesting research into how humans perceive music, and compares the way normal people's brains "read" music compared to the brain of a musician - in this case, Sting, who volunteered to have his brain scanned as part of the research.
