Hard Corps Uprising

It's Contra in all but name. That's what IGN asserts about Hard Corps: Uprising, a new PSN and XBLA run-and-gun expected for release this year. Despite the fact that the side-scrolling shooting gameplay we expect from a traditional Contra is present, and despite the fact that this is actually a sequel to the Genesis Contra: Hard Corps (starring the villain!), Konami has chosen to excise the series name from this digital release.

That's not the strangest thing about this game. Development is being handled by Arc System Works, the developer and publisher of the Guilty Gear games and BlazBlue. We'll withhold judgment; after all, it turned out okay when Konami handed the license to the Ping Pals developer. At least with Arc (like with WayForward), we know we're in for great 2D art.

There will only be 2 playable characters as already said but now it has been confirmed that other characters will be available bia DLC. It would be most awesome if they put up some Blazblue characters for DLC, Noel would fit the game so well would be really awesome.

Plot

Quote
The year is 2613, twenty years before the events of the original Contra. The world is now ruled by an empire known as the Commonwealth under the reign of Tiberius. Neighboring nations have suffered under the Commonwealth's oppression and Resistance Forces rise across the land. However, so many Resistance Fighters have fallen to the overwhelming might of the empire, that their strength is now severely diminished. A group of elite soldiers rise through the ranks of the Resistance and band together to execute a desperate plan. The leader of this group is the war hero Bahamut.

Gameplay

Quote
The game borrows many gameplay elements from previous Contra games. Rising Mode is a completely new mode which adds RPG elements to the game. Players can collect points throughout the levels which are then used in an in-game store to buy various upgrades and customizations for weapons, armor and character abilities. Rising Mode also includes a health bar, similar to Contra: Hard Corps. For veteran players who prefer more difficulty there is an Arcade Mode, which has no health bar.

Many new moves have been added. The character can dash, dash in mid-air, double-jump and deflect enemy projectiles by bouncing them back. More moves can be added in Rising Mode.

Weapons include: standard rifle, machine gun, spread shot, crash gun (shoots arcing grenades), heat gun (shoots large blasts of fire) and chain laser (homes in on enemy targets). As in Contra III, you can carry two weapons and switch between them at any time. By collecting the same weapon several times you will improve its strength or rate of fire. More weapon upgrades are available in Rising Mode.
