Avatar Sequel Announced
« on: July 29, 2010, 12:07:08 PM »
While not explicitly an anime, it is a highly acclaimed animated series nonetheless.

The Nickelodeon produced Avatar: The Last Airbender (The Legend of Aang) was both a commercial and critical success, it even spawned a (piss-poor) M. Night Shayamalan feature film.

Avatar Sequel Announced

News coming out of SDCC is that Nickelodeon have announced plans to air a new Avatar show next year (2011). Viewers will be pleased to hear that original creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will be helming the new show as well.

Tentatively titled "The Legend of Korra," the animated series will premiere in 2011 and focus on the next Avatar, a young female called Korra.

"Mike and Bryan have imagined a compelling new story inspired by the Airbender mythology that they so brilliantly crafted when the TV series began," said Brown Johnson, president, animation, Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group. "This new avatar is not only a girl, but also hot-headed, independent and ready to take on the world."

"Korra" is set 70 years after the events of "Airbender" and sees Korra moving to the epicenter of the modern "Avatar" world, Republic City - a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology to master her final element - air. With the guidance of the previous avatar Aang's son Tenzin, she has to fight crime and face a growing anti-bending movement that threatens to rip the metropolis apart.

I loved the original show and am very excited to see some more action.

OMW! OMW! Mind-blowing news. 8)

Also loved the original show to bits, looking forward to watching the live-action. :P

Gotta be said tho, the title of the thread threw me off, was thinking it was a sequel to James Cameron's movie. :P Since this one is now, cause of James, known as "The Last Airbender". >_>

I did it intentionally. Screw JC and his name-stealing ways!

hahaha... Well said. The fact that JC's movie was sooo~ awesome, made me forget how angry I initially was at the name-stealing. :P

Hmmm... Will need to do some soul-searching.

That is really great news! Something to look forward too!

The original series passed me by for a while, but once I got around to watching it, was hooked completely and utterly. Its proof that the 'Merkins are able to tell detailed, immersive stories in animated format and not just churn out schlocky kids cartoons :).
