Well technicially this artist has done artwork for a novel that became a manga :D

It's Yoshitaka Amano, who some of you may recognise as the illustrator behind more of the Final Fantasy core titles.

Gotta admit, although I respect Amano's artwork, it's not exactly to my likely - has this old-school "smooth" feel to it, whereas I prefer edger stuff. ::) Like say wicked looking spikey-hair. :P

Another favorite of mine is Seishi Kishimoto (younger twin of Masashi Kishimoto). Although I wasnt originally a fan, being of the opinion that he just copied his brother's style. After reading an artwork behind-the-scenes kind of book of his and learnt of the thought process that he goes through when drawing he gained my respect. He puts so much thought into his work, not worrying about how the final product looks but considering how he would draw it in the future.

I like a number of differant artist's styles, but amongst my favourites would be:

Urusawa Naota (Monster, 20th Century Boys, Pluto) - clean lines, detailed without being overwhelming (I hate over messy panels as I find it hard work absorbing the pictures).

Shimoku Kio (Genshiken) - ditto, plus he draws my fave female chara of all time (Kanoko Ohno  ;)).

Tsutomu Nihei (BLAME!, Noise, Biomega) - find his chara designs very scruffy and some of his panels are of the messy type I don't like (rough lines, too many sound FX thingies etc), BUT he tells awesome stories and his background perspective is just amazing - I feel as if I can dive into some of his panels and just fall forever.

Urushibara Yuki (Mushishi) - a rougher art style, but very well suites the organic nature of the stories she tells.
