Battle.net's digital games
« on: August 03, 2010, 09:58:41 AM »
Last night I decided to try out World of WarCraft again. These days I know a few more people with internet so it may be worth getting a few people to play.

After my my original WoW discs failed me (looks like an install issue with version 2.0 on Windows 7 64bit) I decided to look for a digital download for the installer. Some clicks and Googling later - presto I found it!

This led me to the You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login
Battle.net
site, which required registration. Want to know a nifty little feature? Blizzard offers you a change to put in your [original - bought] game CD key and activate a digital copy of the game on their servers.

What does all of this mean?

If you ever loose your copy of Diablo II, WarCraft 4 etc then you can just re-download it from Battle.net. Quite simple.

This will work for the following games:
  • World of WarCraft
  • WarCraft 3: Reign of Chaos
  • WarCraft 3: The Frozen throne
  • Diablo II
  • Diablo II: Lord of Destruction
  • StarCrat 1 Anthology
  • StarCraft II

I agree there. The base WoW installed I'm downloading atm (3.3) is around 7.5GB...

Awesome feature, but here in SA, unless you're on uncapped, it'll really hurt. :P

Not really it's all about who you use as an ISP and how often your area has power failures. I'm getting around 35gb every 2-3 days on a 2gb capped account. I have 4 2gb accounts and then 1 free uncapped account, I use the 2gb accounts at the beginning of the month and when they have run out move over to the uncapped. Getting around 140gb from the 4 2gb accounts. You just need to know how the system works.

Not to mention that the Blizzard downloader thingy really sux too.

@DP: Why still bother with the 4 2gb a/c's if you have a 'free' uncapped a/c?
Also, you're probably one of the people my ISP talks about in their emails about ppl abusing the network arent you?

Because unshaped uncapped internet is still quite expensive in this country, where as the standard 4mb uncapped shapped account costs me R300 but most of the main data I download gets shapped so I only get half my actual line speed. Where as with my 4 2gb accounts I can get all the major stuff I want in the first week and then let the line coast for the rest of the month.

I work for an ISP, and the abuse that they talking about are the people buying uncapped accounts and logging in with more than one router at various locations, hence why most of the uncapped accounts only allow one authenticated line. Although now they are increasing it to 2 authentications on the uncapped accounts. This obviously depends on your ISP.

I don't see any problems with getting 35gb off a 2gb account? Is it my problem that my ISP relies on Telkom to drop lines so that users have to re-authenticate so that their account updates and so caps them if need be? Telkom never does this anymore anyway. It's not my fault the ISP only updates when an account hard caps. To me thats just knowing the system and getting the most out of my money :)

From what I can see only WoW (and SC2?) use the actual downloader. The older games digital versions are downloaded via your web browser.

Know what ISP to use, sign up, get ur username and password for your router, insert in to router, start downloading and never turn off your router :) some people get around power failures with a UPs, but it isn't really needed. By the time Telkom drops your line, which hardly ever happens you would have hard capped your account.

Never buy more than a 2gb account since from 2gb and upwards you will always get 30 local. Only the 1gb gives you 10gb local bandwidth. So if you get the 3gb you will easily be able to download in the region of 30-35 gb off the account. Where as with a 1gb probably around 10-12gb.
