Off the beaten track
« on: September 20, 2010, 11:23:30 PM »
So post those anime series you really want to see, or have seen part of, but can't seem to get ahold of. Also shows you love, but when you mention them to others they are all *blank* "Never heard of it" etc.

1. Master Keaton - by the creative mind behind "Monster" and "20th Century Boys". Can't get anywhere.

Off the beaten track

2. Keroro Gunsou - aka Sgt Frog - got a few eps, its hilarious, its big in Japan. No-one seems to have it here, and I get blank looks a lot of the time when I mention it.

Same here. I really want to see Sgt Frog aswell. Also cant find it. Also slightly put off by it as its pretty big/long (the current has ended in Japan however). In the same boat would be Detective Conan but that has more episodes than One Piece!

Others...
I dont even know the name of it but it involves a nuclear bomb being dropped and people dying. Very old but good I hear.

I saw the trailer on one my Geneon DVD’s, it looked cool reminded me somewhat of Case Closed.
I believe you should blame Pioneer/Geneon  for taking their sweet time  releasing anime boxsets.  Certain volumes are available on Amazon, you might have look on ebay for the rest. I think your best bet would be to wait for a re release.
BB have you ever read Pineapple Army.

The Case Closed boxsets usually retail for less than R250, on special it would set you back somewhere between R190 – R209.  So far five boxsets have been released, each consisting of 20 – 26 episodes.

Phoenix

I saw it on Animax, I could not believe how good it was.

Anyway I'm looking for Princess Nine, an old ADV tile currently out of print

BB have you ever read Pineapple Army. It’s a collaboration between  Kazuya Kudo (Mai the Psychic Girl) and  Naoki Urasawa. Sadly Viz cancelled it after one volume

New to me - must keep an eye out for it. Maybe someone has scans...

Up until recently I would have included Legend of the Galactic Heroes & Space Battleship Yamato here but I found some copies of them.

LotGH still doesnt seem to be available in boxset format though. Its wonder nobody has licensed this yet?

It is an eight volume series. A group has currently re scanned  and translated somewhere between 6 - 9 chapters. You must check out the first chapter, BB.

Since you are a Naoki Urasawa fan BB,  I suspect you might  own the following title

If I had the money I'd buy the first  boxset, never mind the fact that AnimEigo has been unsuccessful in licensing the  rest of the series.

Quote from: wikipedia
The significance of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in the story is that in the real world, this was the first time that Women's Judo would be a full competition event, and would thus see the awarding of the first ever Olympic gold medal for Women's Judo.

Yawara! was very popular in Japan, so when real life Japanese teenager Ryoko Tamura won a silver medal for judo at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, she was seen as a real-life "Yawara" (her age, stature, and ability all being strikingly similar to those of the fictional character) and promptly nicknamed "Yawara-chan".
She was still known by this name eight years later, indicating perhaps the enduring popular recognition of the series as well as that of Ryoko Tamura herself.
